

| Although we lived in "America's Playground," not many of us got to go where the richer tourists went. We were either not old enough, or we simply didn't have the money. In 1958, I took Phyllis Kramer to see South Pacific at the Sheridan Theater on Lincoln Road and a pair of tickets cost me $3.00; that was a lot of money considering a Saturday matinee double feature could be seen at the Cinema Theater (1235 Washington Avenue) or the Cameo Theater (1445 Washington Avenue) for $0.25. No, most of us had to be content with a the occasional educational school field trip to the Serpentarium or the Miami Seaquarium, or an outing to somewhere nearby (and inexpensive) with the family. Besides a day at the beach, here were a few of the possibilities we enjoyed: | |
